16 March 2011 - Mexico has approved reforms in the law that will allow companies to become self-producers using hydroelectricity, according to El Universal newspaper.
Up until now Mexican law had not allowed self-generation of hydroelectric energy if the plant’s installed capacity exceeded 30 MW or if more than a hectare was required to build the plant.
"This will allow us to lower our dependency of generating power from burning coal, oil or gas, which are what is mostly used in the country, said Juan Jose Guerra Abud, a congressman from the Green Party in Mexico.
