More evidence of value of cogeneration during Sandy

More news is emerging of the part cogeneration technology played in keeping the power on in the US during Hurricane Sandy this week.

New York University was forced to cancel classes and its medical centre was subject to severe damage however the NYU’s main academic buildings were not flooded and a two year old natural gas fired cogeneration plant maintained continuous power to science and key administrative builidings.

Hurricane Sandy
The NYU Langone Medical Centre was in the midst of constructing its own cogeneration facility when Hurricane Sandy struck. Unfortunately a portion of the hospital’s power distribution circuits, which direct the generated electricity out into various areas of the hospital, were located in the hospital’s basement.

Richard Cohen, vice president of facilities operations at the centre said the new technology for powering the facility will now be relocated to an upper level.

“We’ve purchased all the equipment,” Cohen said. “We currently expect to have it completed sometime around 2014.”

Meanwhile the considerable Mutual Development Houses cooperative, better-known as Penn South, remained unaffected- The 10-building, 2,820-unit complex, located at 321 Eighth Avenue in Chelsea, has a cogeneration system in place, so it retained electricity while its neighbours plunged into darkness.

Princeton College in New Jersey has also been indebted to its cogeneration equipment and released a video on YouTube this week explaining how it was able to withstand the fierce storm that devastated much of the state’s power supplies.
