Inspector General: DOE spent up to $26/MWh for renewable energy in 2010

18/05/2012

According to new audit from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Inspector General, the DOE met more than 9% of its electricity needs in 2010 either by purchasing renewable energy credits or paying a premium for "green power," with prices ranging from 44 cents per MWh to $26.67 per MWh.

In an effort to promote renewable energy, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 requires that by fiscal year 2013 at least 7.5% of a federal agency's annual electricity consumption must be from renewable sources. In fiscal year 2010, three years before it was required to do so, DOE "acquired approximately 461,000 megawatt hours from renewable sources, representing over 9% of its annual electricity consumption of 4.8 million megawatt hours," Deputy Inspector General for Audits and Inspections Rickey Hass said in an April 30 audit report.

EMerge Alliance Forms New Campus Microgrid Technical Standards Committee; Intel leading the charge to connect multiple DC microgrids throughout commercial buildings; others invited to join effort

18/05/2012

The EMerge Alliance - an open industry association leading the rapid adoption of safe direct-current (DC) power distribution standards for commercial buildings - today announced the formation of a new Campus Microgrid Technical Standards Committee at the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2012 National Convention and Design Exposition.

Chaired by Guy AlLee, of Intel's Energy Research and Sustainability Labs, the new committee will focus on establishing a standard for the integration of DC microgrids throughout a building or campus. The standard will focus on improved efficiency of integrated on-site power generation, storage, distribution and use by capitalizing on the utilization of native DC power. With input from member organizations, the new Campus Microgrid standard will integrate the other EMerge Alliance standards that enable the use of DC power at various levels and in a variety of spaces. The resulting set of standards will further advance the Alliance's mission to help building designers and owners achieve greater flexibility, sustainability and savings.
